Anna Laudel Düsseldorf will present Mathias Hornung’s solo exhibition, “Blue Morpho.” In this new series of works, the Berlin-based artist combines graphics and sculpture, exploring the interplay of color, form, and material.

The exhibition is dedicated to transformation as an artistic principle. The title “BLUE MORPHO” refers to the Central American butterfly of the same name, whose iridescent blue wings—an effect of light reflection rather than pigments—inspired Hornung during a work residency in Costa Rica. This theme of change and fragility, visible in the fractures, transitions, and organic forms of his works, runs throughout the exhibition, addressing the balance between stability and transformation.

Hornung blends traditional woodcut techniques with contemporary themes and materials. His works also reflect key concepts of morphology, the science of form and transformation, which plays a crucial role in his artistic processes. The interplay between natural and systematic structures—drawing inspiration from organic processes as well as digital orders—creates a compelling aesthetic.

Hornung produces works characterized by aesthetic openness by deliberately incorporating irregularities and fractures. His woodcuts engage in a dialogue between craftsmanship and the unpredictable dynamics of instinctive and linear processes, evoking digital worlds.

In this exhibition, Mathias Hornung redefines the boundaries between nature and technology, tradition and innovation. His works reflect the ambivalences of our time, making the transformative power of art tangible—both sensually and conceptually.
